600 participants met at the German Biotechnology Days (DBT) 2021 on 20 and 21 September 2021 for a two-day symposium in the International Congress Centre at Messe Stuttgart. The BVIZ (Federal Association of German Innovation, Technology and Start-up Centers e.V. (BVIZ) was represented by its BioParks WG with a joint stand of 15 members, including BioCampus Cologne together with the RTZ.

After the welcoming addresses by Federal Minister of Health Jens Spahn, Minister President of Baden-Württemberg Winfried Kretschmann and Lord Mayor Dr Frank Nopper, exciting symposia on diagnostics, bioeconomy, climate, and nutrition as well as digitalization followed by AI.

The discussion, available as a digital stream too, also focused on "The pandemic as a challenge and incentive". The participants asked themselves whether anything is left of the momentum in biotechnology that everyone could feel at the beginning of the pandemic? Because although biotechnology has had great successes around, for example, the development of mRNA-vaccines, it is only given secondary recognition in the election programs of the major parties. In most programs, topics such as "innovations" and "newer technologies" are implemented. However, no party ultimately links these topics practically with terms such as "genetic engineering or genetic technology" or "bio engineering or biotechnology". "Genetic engineering" and "biotechnology" are predominantly addressed in the fields of agriculture, food and nutrition.

Precisely but the innovative technologies of biotechnology that have had a special significance in the fight against the Covid 19 pandemic and the rapid development of highly effective vaccines against the coronavirus. For the future, there remains hope for a higher status of biotechnology, more acceptance and promotion of biotechnology in society and politics.

The next Biotechnology Days 2022 will be held in Hamburg on 4-5 May 2022.
